Alkalizing diets – myth or marvellous?

Firstly let’s just get an idea of what we’re talking about here – what is a base and an acid? I’m not going to go into detail about the ‘probability of hydrogens’ and the pH scale and all the scientific stuff. You don’t really need to know that for this. All I want you to have in your head is: When you think of a base, think of bi-carb soda or any anti-acid like ‘Eno’. When you think of an acid, just think of lemon juice or the blood from the Aliens movie.

So what’s the idea then? Many diseases are caused when the body’s is either too acidic or too basic. Most people’s diet and life styles lead them to be more acidic and we have never come across someone who is too basic, so let’s just talk about acidic bodies then.

What happens when we are too acidic? It’s believed that when he body becomes acidic, disease manifests. This generally relates to a conditions that have inflammation (eg: arthritis, gout, cancer, Chrons Disease, IBS), indulgence (eg: goat, obesity, high cholesterol) and stagnation (eg: eczema and other skin conditions, menstrual problems, Hypothyroid). It’s a well-known scientific fact that chemical reactions happen at certain acidity levels (Ie: pH levels). BUT is that transferable to your body?
Is it true? Well it’s kind of a tricky answer. We feel that people who use these words don’t actually know what they are talking about. We mean what part of the body are they referring too? Your blood and lymph Acidity level (p.H = 7.35 – 7.45) that is very different to your stomachs (p.H= 1.5 – 3.5). So when people say your ‘too acidic’ and need to go on an alkalizing diet – what do they actually mean? We don’t know, lol.  Also, the two major systems in your body (blood and lymph) have a very tight P.H range – so how effective are you going to be at changing this?

But why do people feel so much better on an alkalized diet? Well, think about it like this – ‘what types of foods are you eating when you go on an alkalizing diet?’ You’re eating a lot of the stuff we normally neglect; fruit and veggies! So of course you feel better! You’re eating a healthy diet. Fruit and veggies provide your body with all the nutrients it needs to fight the disease that, let’s face it, most of us don’t get enough of.

Final thought?  Alkalizing diets are generally a good healthy diet that is high in fruit and veggies, so go for it! Is it alkalizing your body? Probably not.

P.S. There is a lot of stuff left out here, like ‘why is lemon juice is considered alkalizing when it’s an acid?’, and ‘how do we determine what foods are acidic or alkalizing’, etc, but we are just trying to give you an over view.
